About Us

I'm Peter Lyons, the photographer behind Lyons Imaging. I've been an avid photographer since I was 13, when my dad gave me my first "real" camera, a Canon SLR. I took right to it. I read just about every photography book in the library, and shot thousands of slides during high school and college.

My love of the water comes just as naturally. All throughout my life, I've been drawn to lakes and the ocean, and have made my way to them any time I've been free to roam. Vacations and long weekends were often spent on--or at least by--the water. After my four kids (my pride and joy) were born, I started taking them with me. I even built a wooden kayak for a crew of five!

For reasons that don't make much sense now, I did not pursue a career in photography right from the start. Instead I spent 15 years in more conventional jobs (cartography and computer programming), though I never enjoyed the work much, and never prospered in those jobs.

Finally, in 2006, I lost my comfortable job and paycheck, and decided it was time to pursue work that I love. I spent the next six months studying photography full-time, both to fill in the gaps in my knowledge and to get caught up with the technology. Then I moved to San Francisco, bought a powerboat, and got busy taking pictures.

As I get around the Bay shooting whatever I find to shoot, I meet many others who share the love of the water, whether for sailing or kayaking or fishing, or even just walking along the shore. Many have become friends.

It's been great, too, meeting and getting to know several other photographers who work the Bay. Every one of them has been a help to me, and I'm grateful to each of them. You'll find profiles of several of my colleagues here.
